Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities
The fourth and final domain of Danielson's Framework is about one word - Professional. Teachers must hold themselves to high professional standards since they are very influential on their students and can be valuable role models. Being professional also means taking work seriously which is demonstrated by maintaining accurate records and being meticulous about logistical matters. Something else to consider is how teachers interact with parents and the community as a whole. It is essential that teachers communicate clearly and respectfully with parents even if the parents fail to do so themselves. This will ensure that teachers avoid parent-teacher conflicts and will keep their reputation clean. It is also important that teachers get involved in the community and have a beneficial impact upon it. This domain also highlights personal growth as an educator and how it contributes to the success of students.
As a future educator, I plan on demonstrating this domain by striving to be the most professional and respectful person I can be. For example, I will dress appropriately every day and stay on top of my responsibilities so that I can be a positive image for the school I teach at. I will also be sure to hear out any qualms that parents may have about me and respectfully discuss the issue and resolve the conflict without ruining the student's learning experience. I also will try to get involved in the community and show support for my school activities. I could do this by attending sporting events and musical performances. Finally, I will always strive to develop as a professional educator. I realize that teaching is itself a learning experience and no teacher is ever to good to stop looking for ways to improve. I think it is important that I frequently reflect on my teaching and what I can do to improve it. A specific example of this could be by giving students class evaluations to see what my students think could be better or what should be different. Additionally, I could compare my lessons with other teachers in my same discipline to look for errors in my own lesson or make some modifications based on other teachers' experiences.
